What will a bestselling book do for you?
Once you have reached the bestseller list, you are there. No one can take that away from you. For the rest of your life (and for a long time afterward), you will be referred to as "the bestselling author of [your book title]." What you can gain from this new title and status is limited only by your imagination.
Some of the more obvious benefits of having a national bestseller include:
- Improved name recognition in your industry.
- Better book distribution — stores increase shelf-space for your bestselling book.
- Greater media exposure.
- Increased speaking and consulting fees.
- Business growth due to increased consumer awareness.
- Stronger brand name and company identity.
- Bigger and better deals from publishers on your next book(s).
- In short, with a bestseller you can gain fame, fortune, and the ability to make a difference.
Book Marketing and Branding. How do you get a bestselling book?
There are four ways to reach any of the national bestseller lists:
Hard work. Thegood, old-fashioned way. You do everything — and I mean everything.Begin with a universal topic that no one can afford to ignore. Runmultimillion-dollar ad campaigns for your book. Set up major-leaguebook events in at least 50 major cities during the first week.
Spend thousands of dollars on your PR campaign, and make sure to include expensive satellite media tours, national morning drive radio tours, and everything else you can think of. Start planning your launch two or three years in advance of initial publication.
Get lucky. Thisrequires blind faith. You can always hope your book gets noticed bysome super-powerful media mogul who wants to do everything possible totell the entire planet about you and your work at his or her ownexpense.
Rig it. Unethical and possibly detrimental. If you have enough money, you can fill awarehouse with your own books. But . . . do you really want yoursuccess that bad? Are you willing to risk your reputation? Best case:You don't hit the bestseller list, but you hit the front page with ascandal story. Worst case: The lists ignore you by not counting any ofyour books as sold.
